At Family Eco Life we share a lot about the wonderful eco-conscious products and businesses the Sunshine Coast has on offer. We also like to talk about the inspiring minds behind these brands and wanted to learn a little more about some of these thoughtful founders in our eco-community.
As well as founding an innovating eco-business, Mimmi and Adam from Seastraws chose to incorporate a ‘give back initiative’ into their business by donating 5% of profits to The Great Barrier Reef Legacy. This means your eco-purchase goes even further and truly supports those protecting our ocean.
I recently asked Mimmi from Seastraws to jump in the hot seat and here’s what she had to say!
SEASTRAWS FOUNDERS: MIMMI + ADAM (and Baby Odin)
Can you tell us how you came up with the Seastraws concept?
During my first (Adam’s been there before) surf trip to Indo we were chocked by the amount of plastic waste in the ocean and on the roads. So, when returning home we decided we wanted to be a part of the change. We started with glass straws because neither of us were happy with the reusable alternatives offered in Australia at the time. Said and done, a year later we finally launched Seastraws!
What was the first eco-friendly/sustainable swap you made in your personal life?
I’ve been using reusable water bottles as long as I can remember. Even at a very young age I found bottled water such a strange thing considering we can drink perfectly fine water from the tap (btw, the tap water in Sweden is AMAZING!).
Tell us what you love most about living on the Sunshine Coast?
The relaxed lifestyle and the ocean outside my doorstep.
What is your favourite thing to do in your ‘off time’?
I surf whenever there’s waves and I love spending time with my little family.
What or who inspires you on your conscious consumer journey?
Walking along the beach stretch of Kawana every single morning makes me appreciate where I live and I want my son to be able to feel the same way. It reminds me to live more sustainably as I can’t rely on others to turn this thing around.
What is your favourite product in the Seastraws range?
I love the clear smoothie straw for my morning smoothie. However, I always keep an Everyday Seastraw in my bag as it’s perfect for all kind of drinks when I’m out and about.
What is something we would be surprised to know about you?
I used to be a semi-professional snowboarder for seven years but I had to quit due to a severe knee injury that I never fully recovered from.
Can you give us your favourite smoothie recipe?
This is the green smoothie I have every morning:
1 Frozen banana, large kale leaf, ½ cup almond milk, 1 tbspn sunflower seeds, chia seeds, 1 tspn shredded coconut, super-greens, that’s it! Sometimes I add ice to make it colder but most days I’m lazy and skip it.
Just for fun, If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
I would probably say some kind of bird because I’d love to be able to fly. Or, a sea creature so I could breath under water and check out what’s down there.
What’s next for Seastraws?
We’re adding a few new straw colours and sizes to our range. We’re also expanding our brand with a couple of new products. It should all be live within the next couple of months. Stay tuned!
