How to mindfully design your outdoor space
by Nikki Rowe from Weaver Green
When designing our homes both inside and out, a finished space is obviously the aim, and the usual way of approaching the task is to have it completely finished in the quickest time possible. It can take a little longer to mindfully create your space, but ultimately you will end up with a space that stands the test of time, and is a great fit for you and your family in the long term.
The first step in designing your outdoor space is the planning! There are a few questions you should ask yourself first: What is your budget? Set aside a budget or make a longterm plan to save for the key pieces you would like.
Timeframe: Is there an event you particularly need the space ready for or can you live in the space for a while so you can think about how it may best be utilised. Also have a think about what you plan to use the space for most: Entertaining? Relaxing? Meals? Weigh up what you will be using the space for and how much space needs to be allocated.Get on Pinterest and create a mood board; it will really help you to narrow down the look you are after.
Buy quality: When it comes to buying furniture you really do get what you pay for, so buy the best you can possibly afford. Do your research, and even if you can only buy one chair a month, within a year you will have furniture that will last for decades, rather than falling apart in the first couple of seasons.
Lighting and plants: the right type of lighting can really make an outdoor space become magical, so it is important to put some thought and planning into illumination. Solar Fairy lights and festoon lighting are inexpensive and easy to install. A little herb garden with all your favourite herbs , include some that keep the mosquitoes away such as peppermint, basil, lemon balm and rosemary, or something for the bees, like thyme oregano, lavender or jasmine. A lattice climbing frame can become a fragrant wall of Jasmine in quite a short time!
Outdoor Soft Furnishings: Soft furnishings are the final piece to really bring the space together. Our gorgeous range of Weaver Green products are the perfect fit! Made entirely from recycled plastic bottles, UV stable, stain and mould resistant, hardwearing and machine washable. The best part is that they are ethically and sustainably produced, and to date, over 100 million plastic bottles have been recycled, 40% of which were taken directly from waterways, preventing them from reaching our oceans!
Choosing your Outdoor Rug : Outdoor rugs add an element of comfort and luxury as well as helping to define separate seating areas. As our rugs are made from recycled plastic bottles (but you wouldn’t know it!), they are perfect for bringing a little bit of luxury to your outdoor space. From Hamptons to Boho, we really do have a rug for every style of decor and design. The style of your outdoor space should reflect the style inside the house, and it’s nice to keep a thread of colour running through both spaces. Outdoor cushions, throws and blankets are another area where it is worth investing in something that is not only beautiful, but will last. Our mould resistant and UV stable material is perfect for outdoor areas, to make a comfortable haven for all seasons!
